Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga established the label in 1918. Though successful in his career, he was forced to relocate to The City of Light when the Spanish civil war broke out in 1963. His designs were met with as much enthusiasm and his popularity rapidly grew for being an innovator in the world of fashion. Balenciaga’s colorful career that spanned decades not only shaped the fashion landscape but the careers of his former protégés as well. Fashion designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Andre Courreges, Emmanuel Ungaro and Hubert de Givenchy all worked under his guidance. Today the brand continues to astound us with their designs. One of its most significant contributions to the world of fashion is the Lariat (a.k.a) ‘motorcycle’ bag.
